Cubs' Cole Mathis: Gets Tommy John surgery
Rotowire
Mathis announced Thursday via his personal Instagram account that he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
The No. 54 overall pick in this past June's First-Year Player Draft, Mathis will have to wait until 2025 to make his professional debut. As a position player, Mathis won't require the year-plus-long recovery process that pitchers face for Tommy John surgery, but the 21-year-old still may not be fully cleared for the start of the 2025 minor-league season. Mathis could also be limited to playing designated hitter early on in the 2025 campaign if he hasn't completed his throwing program by the end of the spring.

Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Halted by Guardians
Rotowire
Taillon (8-7) took the loss against Cleveland on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over six innings.
Taillon got through three scoreless frames before the Guardians touched him up for two runs in the fourth. Cleveland scored twice more in the fifth, and the Cubs' offense managed only one run in the contest to send Taillon to his seventh loss of the campaign. The right-hander had a nice run of successful outings between mid-June and late July, but over his past four starts he's given up at least four earned runs on three occasions to push his season ERA up to 3.62.

Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Triples, scores in loss
Rotowire
Suzuki went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Guardians.
Suzuki tallied his fifth triple of the season in the fourth inning on a sharp line drive to center field. The 29-year-old has been displaying a bit more speed this year, as he's already recorded a career-high 10 stolen bases, and the five triples are one away from matching his career best. Suzuki also has 16 home runs and an .814 OPS, making him a well-rounded fantasy asset once again in 2024.

Cubs' Colten Brewer: Completes live batting practice
Rotowire
Brewer (hand) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
It would appear to be the first time he's faced hitters since he suffered a fractured left hand in early July when he punched the dugout wall. Brewer is on the 60-day injured list and not eligible to return until early September.

Cubs' Cade Horton: Likely out for season
Rotowire
Horton recently suffered a setback in his rehab for a right lat strain and isn't expected to return from Triple-A Iowa's 60-day injured list this season, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Though Horton is expected to resume throwing before Iowa's season comes to an end Sept. 22, the 22-year-old right-hander won't have enough time to get ramped up for a return to game action. The setback is a tough development for Horton, who is one of the Cubs' top pitching prospects and looked like a candidate to make his MLB debut at some point in 2024 before suffering the lat injury in late May. Over his nine starts with Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season, Horton compiled a 4.46 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB over 34.1 innings.

Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Completes first rehab start
Rotowire
Wicks (oblique) covered 1.2 innings and struck out two batters while giving up six earned runs on four hits and three walks in his first rehab outing Saturday with Triple-A Iowa.
In his first game action since landing on the injured list in mid-June with a Grade 2 right oblique strain, Wicks looked rusty, but Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that the left-hander came out of the 43-pitch outing feeling healthy, per MLB.com reports. According to Brett Taylor of BleacherNation.com, Wicks' fastball velocity hovered around 91 mph in the rehab outing, a couple ticks below his average for the season. The Cubs are hopeful that Wicks can gradually ramp up both his velocity and volume of pitches during his rehab assignment, which will most likely include at least two more starts. Wicks could still be on track to return from the 60-day IL before the end of August.

Rookie Jhonkensy Noel hits a 430-foot homer for the go-ahead run as the Guardians edge the Cubs 2-1
Stats
-
Cubs' Nico ho*rner: Productive in loss
Rotowire
ho*rner went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Guardians. He also stole two bases.
ho*rner was a bright spot for Chicago amid a poor offensive performance, as the rest of the team combined for only three hits. The infielder also stole multiple bases in a game for the third time this season. ho*rner is now up to 22 stolen bases overall, and his ability to run is the main source of his fantasy value, as he doesn't offer much power.

Cubs' Drew Smyly: Takes loss Tuesday
Rotowire
Smyly (3-6) allowed a solo home run across 1.1 innings of relief to take the loss Tuesday against the Guardians. He struck out one.
A blast by Jhonkensy Noel in the fifth inning was the only damage against Smyly, but it saddled him with the loss in Cleveland's 2-1 victory. Despite the 3-6 record, Smyly has been solid this season with a 2.83 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 47.2 innings. All of that work has come out of the bullpen, which is a contrast from last year, when the veteran lefty made 23 starts for the Cubs.

Cubs' Michael Busch: Idle against lefty
Rotowire
Busch is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians.
The lefty-hitting Busch will take a seat Tuesday as southpaw Matthew Boyd takes the mound for Cleveland. Patrick Wisdom will bat fifth and play first base.

Cubs' Hayden Wesneski: Completes bullpen session
Rotowire
Wesneski (forearm) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Wesneski has been rehabbing his strained right forearm at the Cubs' facility in Arizona, and Tuesday's workout marked his first mound activity since being placed on the injured list July 20. The 26-year-old appears to be multiple weeks out from being reinstated from the IL.

Stats

Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Only lasts five innings
Rotowire
Imanaga did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out three.
Imanaga allowed two homers, the fifth time in 22 starts he's given up multiple long balls this season. However, the three-run blast off the bat of Jhonkensy Noel did not impact Imanaga's earned run line as it came following an error that had extended the fourth inning. Imanaga followed up by allowing three runs in the fifth, this time all earned, and a night that began with a promising three-run lead ended with him leaving with a four-run deficit. The five innings represented the Japanese rookie's shortest outing since allowing 10 runs over three innings on June 21 and extended a streak that has seen him allow three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight outings. He'll carry a 3.16 ERA and 1.08 WHIP into his next start, tentatively slated to take place in the friendly confines against the Blue Jays.

Rookie Noel homers twice, Guardians outlast Cubs 9-8 in matchup evoking 2016 World Series memories
Stats
-
Cubs' Julian Merryweather: Takes first 2024 loss
Rotowire
Merryweather (1-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over an inning of relief to take the loss Monday against the Guardians. He struck out one.
Merryweather worked a quick seventh inning but he couldn't keep things going in the eighth, when he allowed three straight hits to start the frame, with the final one bringing in the go-ahead run before he got the hook. The righty missed most of this season with a rib stress fracture, as this was just his 10th appearance of the year. Merryweather was much more heavily used in 2023, when he posted a 3.38 ERA and 98 strikeouts across 72 innings out of the bullpen. If the 32-year-old is healthy heading into next season, he should be able to secure a middle-relief role again for the Cubs or another team based on his ability to miss bats.

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Goes deep in loss
Rotowire
Crow-Armstrong went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Guardians
Crow-Armstrong went deep in the fourth inning for his fourth home run of the season and first since July 14, when he left the yard twice. The 22-year-old is known more for his speed, as he has 23 stolen bases this year, though he did launch 20 homers combined between Double-A and Triple-A in 2023. If Crow-Armstrong can develop his power at the MLB level, he'd take a big step forward as a fantasy asset.
